The YouTube Shift: A Review of Mike Majlak's Channel

There’s this noticeable and very important movement going on right now in the YouTube community. It’s this movement to be as unapologetically authentic as possible. Mike Majlak is absolutely unapologetically authentic. Mike’s channel, and Mike himself, embody this craze (and I might even say, he’s the one that’s starting this movement—too far? Fine. I won’t say it—just let it be left unsaid).

Where does this movement come from? Who cares about seeing the truth as long as it’s entertaining? Let’s start at the beginning of last year, 2018. The video that we shall not name was released and the Logan Paul camp got hit hard. (Too hard? Meh, I don't know). But it's one of the first big YouTube controversies that really became a story outside of the YouTube community. Then more people started flocking towards YouTube, and not just the young and bored people either, the mature audience, the audience that wants to learn, the audience that only has 20 free minutes a day.

And let's not forget to mention, the beauty community has had its huge ups and downs lately. There’s been a ton of drama, backstabbing, and he-said she-said bullshit. Careers are being ruined at the snap of a finger—and crazy enough, it’s not Thanos wearing the gauntlet; it’s the fans. Is this power that the fans are holding right now pushing these creators to be more authentic? Is that where this is all coming from? More later on the state of the Thanos-esque YouTube community right now, but are we pushing the platform to be as honest and open and “authentic” as possible with our career ruining tweets/videos/etc? It’s almost as if we are saying, YouTubers need to tell the truth all the time (unlike some of our leaders, where we have no idea what’s truth and what’s not), or we’ll rip you a new one.

This brings me back to Mike. He came into the picture pretty soon after Logan Paul released the video (queue the gasping and anger for the second time, and I’ll give you a quick sec to grab a pitchfork). Logan Paul’s channel review will be written and posted (can’t wait…), but as of right now, all I’ll say is in the context of what Mike is to his channel and his podcast, Impaulsive. This is also pretty convenient timing, if I should say so myself. That period of YouTube when Logan's video was released was a push to be as big and crazy as possible, and once shit hits the fan, Mike comes along. He doesn’t need to do anything larger than life. He doesn’t really need to do anything but talk to the camera. That’s the shtick. He doesn’t need the bullshit because the fans are enjoying the real him. The dry, quick, and witty standoff that he has against Logan (on Logan’s own channel) is enough to make me cry with laughter on my way to work when I'm usually miserable as fuck.

Mike’s the type that will ask the hard questions—the questions that everyone’s thinking and no one has the backbone to ask. That deserves respect. Imagine sitting next to a guy that has millions of followers on most social media platforms. Then imagine holding your own in a conversation with some of the world's greatest minds, or greatest entertainers, or performers, etc. Not only does he hold his own, but he can turn the conversation any which way he wants. He can turn the conversation towards what the listener wants to hear. That right there—it deserves, at the very minimum, respect.

Looking at the HeyBigMike channel as a whole, there were a couple videos posted about a year ago, and honestly, they didn’t do very well, but where the fun really starts is just over a month ago. Two videos were posted “Answering Your Questions.” Did we check those videos out to catch a glimpse of the yummy Logan Paul? Absolutely. Did we stay because we couldn’t stand to miss what would come out of Mike’s mouth next? Absolutely.

Then came "The Night Shift." Honestly, I couldn't love this show more. It's quick, it's witty, at times, it's super cringey, but I just love it. I watched the first episode two or three times in a row, just because I honestly couldn't stop laughing. And that's my favorite thing to do. Watch YouTube videos over and over again and laugh harder each time because I like laughing. Judge me. Go ahead.

The thing I love the most is how absolutely random Mike is. What started as a quick off handed comment became an entire story line. Honestly, he’s a pro at the offhanded random comments and turning them into more. Take for example, the notorious mop and bucket saga of 2019. It’s stupid. I’ll just say that now. The whole story line is stupid. But it’s funny as hell that someone could make a comment about a mop and bucket and turn it into a full story line. Not only a full story line, but hell, he’s turned it into a teaching moment as well. I won’t spoil this story line for you, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself.

So to wrap up this review/love letter/whatever the fuck this is—looking for authenticity? Well, Mike’s new show "The Night Shift" is where it’s at! It’s raunchy, funny, and (very randomly) thought provoking. Parent’s don’t let your children watch this show. One of the newest segments is “Instagram Model of the Day.” And yes, they are half naked. Also, one of the segments is called "Toilet Time" with Spencer Taylor (I think). It's hysterical the random, goofy shit they come up with.

Oh, and real quick, do you like buttery toast? Watch The Night Shift, and you most certainly will crave buttery toast. How does he make something so boring sound so damn good every single time?
